Now that we've wrapped up the WHO section of the Storytelling Elements Table, we can move on to the third category: HOW.
Originally, I titled this section "When/Where," but it was a mouthful and I didn't much like how it was panning out. So instead, the title was changed to "How," in order to tackle more directly how my character does XYZ. That might seem a little silly, but there's a lot more to how someone does something than simply that physical action or intellectual decision that makes it happen.
HOW covers not the immediate cause and effect that results in the outcome we want when reading, watching, or playing, but the inclinations, and motivations that lead a character from "small town newspaper route" to "slaying mythic beasts for the salvation of mankind."
I hope you're as excited to delve into this as I am. Nearing the end of NaNoWriMo, I've been able to put a lot of this into practice, and it's always fun to test my own theories and plans to see if they really work.
Aside: I know that the WHO section could have gone on for months or even years - there are more archetypes out there than I can shake a stick at. If, when I've finished HOW and WHY, there are still some character types you'd like me to go back and cover, I would be happy to do some research to see what I can find. :)
That's all for this week. Come back in the Wonderful Winter World of December for our first HOW element: Context.
Until then, stay awesome, stay warm, and drink a cup of your favorite hot beverage for me. So long, Inklings.
